Help Improve School Performance - For Hyperactivity/impulsivity

Hyperactivity and impulsivity at school can be detrimental to a child’s school performance, but can also affect the rest of the students in the class. A child can be set up for success with some of the following strategies in the classroom and at home:
  • Catch the child being good and listening when doing school work and reward them for appropriate behaviour. Ignore minor behaviour issues and do not dwell on them.
  • Ask if the child can be given a job in class that requires them to take some responsibility, such as taking attendance.
  • Give the child frequent opportunities to get up and move around. At school, a visual “cue” could be developed with the teacher that acknowledges the child’s need to go for a walk or get a drink.
