Top 10 Tips for parent-teacher discussions

You can use this as a guide for accommodations a teacher may make for a child with ADHD.
  1. Homework should be reduced or essential work could be identified and focused on first.
  2. Shorter or even multiple choice assignments could be given as opposed to extended essays or reports.
  3. Homework assignment requirements could be emailed or texted to parents as well as written in planners.
  4. All homework assignments should be collected the NEXT DAY.
  5. Bonus points could be provided for doing more than is required.
  6. Look at ways of reducing writing requirements, i.e. dictation onto tape recorder or computer use.
  7. Students with ADHD could have the option of staying at school to finish homework or to complete it during the day.
  8. Encourage parents to create social groups for homework, i.e. friends and peers meeting on specific nights to complete homework together.
  9. Parents could be allowed to be a “parent secretary” for students with handwriting difficulties.
  10. Try to promote homework as useful and fun to learn as opposed to a burden to the child and family
