Receiving a Diagnosis
Receiving a diagnosis of ADHD may be a very emotional time for you. You may feel:
- Relief and elation – there is an explanation for your behaviour
- Confusion and emotional turmoil – could I have known this earlier?
- Anger – shouldn’t I have received help earlier?
- Sadness and grief – for the past wasted years
- Anxiety – how will I adjust to life knowing what I now know?
- Accommodation and acceptance – ADHD is part of who I am
These feelings are perfectly normal and are part of an emotional journey towards acceptance of the diagnosis, which will involve you and your family.
