Receiving a Diagnosis

Receiving a diagnosis of ADHD may be a very emotional time for you. You may feel:
  • Relief and elation – there is an explanation for your behaviour
  • Confusion and emotional turmoil – could I have known this earlier?
  • Anger – shouldn’t I have received help earlier?
  • Sadness and grief – for the past wasted years
  • Anxiety – how will I adjust to life knowing what I now know?
  • Accommodation and acceptance – ADHD is part of who I am
These feelings are perfectly normal and are part of an emotional journey towards acceptance of the diagnosis, which will involve you and your family.
