I think I might have ADHD

ADHD is believed to have a genetic component – it “runs in families.” Therefore, if you have a child with ADHD and you recognize some of the symptoms in yourself, you may want to talk to your doctor about it.

If so, these tips may help:
  • Get ready for your visit – write down a list of everything you’d like to talk about in your appointment. The most important things can easily be forgotten once talking starts
  • To make sure your doctor has explained him or herself clearly, try repeating back what he or she has said. This is sometimes known as “active listening.” Writing down everything is also a good idea
  • Bring a family member or friend – having someone else there to take notes, ask questions or just be supportive is a good idea
  • If you’re unsure of anything, don’t be afraid to ask – your doctor is there to make things more, not less, clear to you
If your doctor feels you should be assessed for ADHD, he or she may refer you to a specialist.
